Gertrude Belle Elion (1918-1999) became the first woman to be named to the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1991. Her award-winning research at the Burroughs Wellcome Company led to the development of drugs to combat leukemia, septic shock and tissue rejection in patients undergoing kidney transplants.
Elion also received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1988.
