Stiff and sore muscles are not uncommon after a vigorous workout.

Excessive exercise causes muscles to become stiff and sore because if muscles are worked too hard, the cells run out of oxygen.

This starts a fermentation process which produces lactic acid. The build-up of lactic acid in the muscles causes soreness and stiffness.
