Explore the origin and process of the ancient art of craft batik.
Batik is a very ancient craft dating back at least 2,000 years. It is a method of applying a colored design on textiles by waxing those parts that are not to be dyed. White pure cotton or white pure silk are the best materials to use. Hot wax is applied to the fabric in the areas that are to be kept white and then the dye is added. The lightest color is the first dye. The fabric is then waxed in those areas that are to retain the first color and the process is repeated with a second color. Once all the dyeing is completed, the wax is removed, revealing the design.
