The Wooten Patent Desk provided a solution to business workers' problems of organizing the increasing volume of paperwork that accompanied the rapid expansion of business. These desks offered dozens of pigeonholes and compartments, hinged and rotating parts and elaborate exteriors.

Wooton Patent Desks were manufactured in Indiana from 1874 to 1897 by William S. Wooton and Company; in 1880 the company name changed to Wooton Desk Manufacturing Company. Wooton Patent Desks served well until the 1890s when the widespread use of manila folders and file drawers replaced the limited storage capacity of the desk.
