The absence of proper anti-viral software on a PC can spell virus for computer users.

The number of computer viruses has reached a recent milestone of one million in circulation, according to a report by computer security firm Symantec emphasizing a need for virus removal software. Unfortunately, the cost of many security programs can be high, with prices up to $2,500 in some cases, which prevents some users from attaining protection. In fact, according to a study from antivirus software company Avira, 10 percent of users go without proper antivirus protection.

The solution for many PC users is to download free virus removal software from the Internet to protect against viruses and malicious programs. Although they may lack some features, free programs are better than no security at all, and according to some recent reviews, updated versions can work just as efficiently as fee-based antivirus protection. Read on to learn more about free virus removal, including where to find free virus removal software.

Types of Free Virus Removal Software

In most cases, free virus removal software can be downloaded right from the Web site of the software provider. Although free programs offer many of the same features, they differ in performance and in available options. There are three major free virus removal software providers, as detailed below.

With 60 million registered users, Avast! is one of the most popular free virus removal software programs. Unlike some free antivirus programs, Avast! removes non-virus threats such as spyware and malware. Certified by multiple independent labs, it has been rated favorably for detection and elimination. It is celebrated for its simple user-friendly interface, and users have the option of downloading and changing interface designs from its Web site. On the downside, the program leaves many undesirable files behind after cleaning, and users cannot schedule scans.

AVG is a competitive rival to Avast!, but is even more popular with 70 million registered users. Boasting features such as spyware and malware security, AVG has received favorable reviews from certified independent labs, although it offers no technical support. The most unique feature is its ability to mark threatening Web pages in search engines. However, it is similar to Avast! in that unwanted material remains on the computer after scans.

In a test by PC PRO magazine, Avira's free AntiVir software was found to be better at retrieving more viruses than AVG. Highly regarded in its ability to detect and eliminate viruses, it has the attractive feature of scheduling scans, unlike its counterparts. However, it does not have the ability to scan traversing e-mail and only analyzes files that have been saved. A glaring shortcoming when compared to Avast! and AVG is its inability to catch and eliminate spyware. The constant barrage of windows prompting users to upgrade when the software is updated may be a nuisance for some users.

Finding free virus removal and downloading the software to a computer is a simple task that can protect a PC user's computer files and privacy. For more information about a specific software, visit the provider's official Web site.
